Baklava
Description:
This honey and nut pastry confection is the best part of going to Greek food festivals. Now you can make this delightful treat at home, using frozen phyllo dough.
Ingredients:
1 pound walnuts, shelled
2/3 cup brown sugar
1 T. cinnamon
1-16 oz package phyllo dough, thawed
1 cup butter, melted
1 cup honey
1 ½ cup water
1/3 cup brown sugar
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350. Grease the bottom of a 9 x 13 inch baking pan.
In a blender, grind the first three ingredients together.
Layer three sheets of phyllo dough in the bottom of the pan, trimming as needed. Sprinkle with nut mixture. Place 3 more sheets phyllo, and brush generously with melted butter. Sprinkle with nut mixture. Repeat the phyllo, butter, and nut layers until the pan is nearly full.
Using a sharp knife, score the dough into diamonds. You can place a whole clove into each diamond if you desire. Pour remaining butter over dough.
Bake 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown.
While the baklava is baking, combine sugar, water and cinnamon in medium saucepan and simmer 10 minutes, stirring constantly. Add honey and simmer 2 minutes. Pour over baked baklava.
Let cool in pan on wire rack. When cool, cut into diamonds along score lines.
